leisure today critiques one’s everyday life and shows what they desire. It’s a
break from work and that break satisfies what is missing in work. Listening to music has been a form of leisure
for people for ages. Music existed for a long time that the origin of it is
unknown. This activity has always been accessible to anyone regardless of race,
gender, or age. It’s a type of break from work although some aspects of it do
not fit the criteria of Lefebvre’s theory.
In the past, music was a
communal activity and was an activity to create bonds with people. Now, music
can be an activity for an individual. With the creation of headphones, you can
choose what music you want to listen to and only you can hear it. People listen
to music because it can evoke emotion. Music has several different types of
genres, and each creates a different type of emotion. Sometimes during work,
one is allowed to listen to music making work more enjoyable. Nowadays, music
has become commercialized and people have to pay to listen to music. With the
creation of concerts, people have to pay an excessive amount of money to hear
the artist. It’s not easily accessible for people to attend a concert. For
example, an opera is limited to the upper social class. In the media, the
people who attend operas are usually in their finest clothes and considered to
be cultured people. Listening to music itself is a leisure activity but
nowadays, music has becoming commercialized and is not as accessible as it was
in the past.
